Top Questions
Project Update How does Acid Rain effect the environment?
Acid Rain effects the environment in a negative way by destroying lakes, streams and the forests around it. It causes the trees to deteriorate. Acid rain changes the pH of lakes and oceans which can effect the lives of plants and animals that reside there. Buildings deteriorate because the rain reacts with the contents that are inside of the materials. (i.e. marble)
Where does Acid Rain come from?
Acid rain comes and caused from the emission of certain gases, mainly sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, from vehicle exhausts, homes, factories and power stations.
To sum it all up, most is contributed man-made. A mild solution of sulphuric and nitric acid is formed. It's mainly caused by burning fossil fuels that are released into the atmosphere from impurities found in burning ores and coal. As a result, the chemical that creates Acid Rain is sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx).
How can we minimize our contribution to Acid Rain?
To decrease acid rain, you can bike or walk to places instead of driving. Also, you can take public transit. Furthermore, if you setup/belong in a carpool that would help a lot. In addition, you can write letters to companies and tell them what you think. Make petitions and protest are other things you can do.
Any Alternative methods of generating energy? To create power without pollution, we can use natural energy such as sunlight and wind and transfer that energy into mechanical energy to serve our needs. Crop waste and other wastes can be used for fuel and wood provided more of the USA's primary energy than nuclear power in 1980. Falling water is a good source of energy because it provides 23% of the worlds electricity.
What will happen in the future if Acid Rain continues?
In the future if we continue to pollute, our ozone layer will be depleted but if we become "PowerSmart" (smart when using power, using it efficiently and wisely) we can save it and it will perhaps start to re-build itself.
What is done to prevent Acid Rain?
Well, not a lot is done to prevent acid rain, but not a lot is done to not prevent acid rain. Things that have been made by technology recently have helped make more friendly fuels easier to produce as well as chemicals which the vehicles that use them. Turbine engines and the electric car are already an idea, but the problem is still being worked on.
